Google November 2024 core update is here
Google has started rolling out the November 2024 core update.
The search giant said last week that an update was imminent; it finally landed on Monday (11 November). The customary two-week rollout period has been cited—though it could take longer, as we saw earlier this year.
In a social media post, Google said: “This update is designed to continue our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search.”
100k+ users deactivate X accounts the day after US election
Bluesky and Threads continue to be a sanctuary for social media users seeking pastures new after the US election.
Elon Musk’s close links to President-elect Donald Trump are the “final straw” for many people who are leaving X en masse. NBC News spoke to a number of former users who also complained about issues with bots and online harassment.
There were 115,414 account deactivations on 6 November—a new record since Musk bought the site back in 2022. Several notable accounts, including The Guardian, have also joined the exodus from X.
Both Bluesky and Threads have benefited, with a notable spike in new sign-ups during the last week.
Threads might get ads early next year
With Threads now attracting 275m monthly active users (MAUs), the time appears to be ripe for introducing monetisation on the platform.
A new report from The Information this week claimed Meta is planning to launch an ad programme in early 2025. Officially, nothing has changed; the megacorp has stated its priority is still to “build consumer value first and foremost.”
Don’t rely on Google Trends for content ideas
Google’s John Mueller has cautioned against overusing Google Trends for content ideation. He says it’s “easy to go overboard” and to try and create pages and articles for every search term imaginable. Mueller instead recommends considering whether content will add value for readers.
He says: “Be selective, focus on your own expertise, focus on your users that are likely to be relevant for your business.”
Pinterest’s MAUs jump to 537m
Pinterest continues to tick along after adding 15m active users (and generating more revenue) in Q3. The “visual discovery engine” is also ready for the festive season after adding new gift discovery elements to the app this week.
The update allows users to create custom product wish lists and save items from Gift Guides curated by some of the most famous users on Pinterest.
TikTok gets holiday shopping update
With Black Friday nearly here, TikTok is also getting in on the action with “holiday” shopping streams—and getting celebs to host them. TikTok has promised users big sales and discounts from some of the biggest brands. Stars including Nicki Minaj and the D’Amelio family will front the content.
TikTok added: “From 13 to 28 November, top brands are taking the spotlight on TikTok Shop with deals of up to 55%, like Philips, Maybelline NY, Benefit Cosmetics, Liquid IV, HeyDude, Fenty Beauty, and The Ordinary Store.”
